With the 2011 Rugby World Cup currently in full swing – and half of this blog spending muchas horas playing second row for Washington Rugby Football Club – it seems only fitting to conduct our latest burger review at a Shirlington Irish pub known for its rugby scene.
Samuel Beckett’s is a usual stop of ours for Saturday morning Irish breakfasts, topped with a little Magners cider and a lot of rugby. On a trip earlier this season to watch some of the test matches, however, I decided to veer off the path of bangers, rashers, eggs, ham, potato pancake and brown bread… and I ordered the lamb burger with Cashel blue cheese, chips* and a side of curry.
I know what you are thinking: this picture looks delicious! Luckily, in this case, looks don’t lie. The burger was cooked to perfection at just-barely-medium shade of pink. The blue cheese on my burger was a mild, creamy Cashel blue cheese spread. Though I scraped some off because it was served up a bit heavy-handed, it was delicious. Top the whole experience off with crispy chips and a sneaky side of curry (not always available at lunch!), and I had a worthy excuse for skipping Beckett’s insane Irish breakfast.
Next time you have a hankering for a burger, head over to Samuel Beckett’s for the lamb burger with the Cashel blue cheese. And if you order a Magners, don’t be surprised if they throw a little ice into your glass… it’s supposed to be there.
Burger Score:
Samuel Beckett’s: 8
